This bar in Hatagaya is popular among both foreigners and Japanese and is run by an American owner from New York.
Hatagaya is very close to Shinjuku, just two stops away on the Keio New Line local train.
It’s close enough to stop by Sanita after drinking in Shinjuku.
A foreign friend of mine who frequents this bar recommended it to me.
After some research, I found that it’s well-loved by both foreign and Japanese customers, making it an ideal spot to meet new people, so I decided to check it out.
It seems that about half, if not more, of the customers are foreigners.
According to the staff, the customer ratio is roughly 50% foreigners and 50% Japanese.
The gender ratio is also well-balanced, with about 60% men and 40% women.
The bar’s stylish atmosphere makes it a great spot for couples to enjoy drinks together.
There are eight counter seats, two tables for two, standing tables, and an outdoor drinking area.
If you’re looking to meet new people, the counter seats or standing area would be your best bet.
It’s best to visit this bar a bit earlier in the evening, as that’s when more customers are around.
I recommend going before 10 PM, as the outdoor area closes after that, and the crowd is larger before 10.
Recommended Ways to Meet People
This bar is slightly different from others I’ve introduced; it’s a place where you can go regularly to meet people.
If you want to take your time getting to know others and making friends or even finding a partner, this is the place for you.
I used to frequent another bar, where I became friends with a foreign owner.
We would often go out drinking together, and I also got to know other customers over time.
Slowly building relationships can be a great way to meet new people.
The friendly American owner here may not be fluent in Japanese, but of course, he speaks English, so you’ll have no trouble enjoying a conversation.
He’s also very knowledgeable about drinks, especially bio-wine (natural wine). Talking about wine is a great way to break the ice.
You can also do some wine tasting, which could be a fun way to connect with other customers.
Additionally, the American owner is very fond of his grandmother, and the bar is named after her, so that could be an interesting conversation topic.
The drinks are a bit pricey, so if you plan to drink a lot, it might be better to make this your second stop of the night.
I wasn’t aware of it before, but apparently, there are many foreigners in Hatagaya.
The bar next door is also run by an American owner, and it seems many foreigners live in the area as well.
