Exploring Langmate: Bridging Language and Culture

Langmate Overview
Langmate is primarily an app for learning English and international exchange, but it also offers opportunities to connect with speakers of other languages.
It’s an app designed for people interested in Japan, allowing them to learn the language and culture through interactions with Japanese users.
The app functions like a language learning version of a swipe-based matching app, which can make it a bit tricky to use solely for language learning, in my opinion.
Setting Nationality and Location Preferences
One convenient feature is the ability to set the nationality of the people you want to meet.
If there’s a specific country you’re interested in, you can set that country as a preference, and the app will display users from that country.
You can also set preferences for nationality, age, and gender.
Another useful feature is the ability to set your location.
I don’t recall seeing this option in other language learning apps I’ve used.
This feature is useful if you’re planning to travel or move to Japan, allowing you to set your future location and connect with potential friends, even if you end up living in a different area due to work
Handling Scammers
From my experience, there seem to be quite a few scammers on Langmate, but they tend to disappear over time, possibly because Langmate removes them.
Challenges for Male Users
One downside is that it’s difficult for men to meet people for free on the app.
Even if you match with someone, men can’t send messages without paying, and they can’t read messages sent to them by others.
This aspect makes Langmate somewhat similar to a dating app.
On the other hand, women can use the app for free and send messages, which might make it more appealing for female users.
Understanding the Coin System
Langmate has its own currency, and it costs two coins per swipe, regardless of whether you like or dislike the profile.
Don’t worry if you run out of coins; they will replenish over time.
It’s unfortunate that men can’t do much without paying, but this could mean that those who do pay are more motivated to learn a language, leading to more serious users on the platform.
There are many strange people on other free language learning apps, so Langmate’s payment requirement might result in a higher quality of user.
For those who don’t want to pay, there are other language learning apps available for free, which I would recommend instead.
Here’s a link to my article about my recommended free language learning apps.
In my view, Langmate falls somewhere between a language learning app and a dating app.
It might be worth trying out different language learning apps because the people you meet can vary greatly depending on the app you use.
Why not use a language learning app to seek new connections?
