The Tactics of Scammers: What to Watch Out For on Dating Apps
In a previous article, I shared my experiences encountering scammers on dating apps. Since then, I’ve come across more scammers using new tactics.
In this article, I’ll break down the common traits these scammers share, so you can protect yourself.
Scammers’ Nationalities
The scammers I’ve encountered claim to be from various countries, often from regions in Southeast Asia.
They might mention details about their home country or talk about familiar cultural aspects, which can make them seem more trustworthy.
However, it’s important to be cautious and recognize that anyone can be targeted, regardless of nationality.
Common Scammer Tactic #1: Moving the Conversation to Another App
One of the biggest red flags is when someone you’ve just met on a dating app immediately wants to move the conversation to another messaging app, like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Many scammers try to do this because it’s easier to operate without the security measures and oversight of dating platforms.
In almost every case I’ve encountered, the scammer has suggested switching apps early in the conversation.
This is a huge red flag—by staying on the dating app, you can minimize the chances of getting scammed.
Also, conversations with scammers tend to be very shallow and uninteresting.
They show little interest in genuinely getting to know you, focusing instead on steering the conversation towards their real objective: scamming you.
Common Scammer Tactic #2: Talking About Business or Showing Off Wealth
Another recurring theme among scammers is that they often bring up business or investment opportunities very early in the conversation.
Some even send photos of books like Rich Dad Poor Dad or claim to have been taught business skills by a family member.
They like to flaunt their supposed wealth, sending pictures of cash or talking about their successful ventures.
When you press for more details about their business, it becomes obvious that their knowledge is shallow.
They might also claim to have some “money-making opportunity” that you can get in on—be careful! It’s just a trap.
In one case, I had a scammer send me a picture of a large amount of cash, only to match with me again on a different app months later, using a different name and photo, without recognizing me at all.
This shows how often they change their identity to continue scamming.
Surprising Tactics: Video Calls to Build Trust
A recent trend is that scammers are becoming more bold. They’re willing to do video calls to earn your trust, sometimes even using the person in the profile picture. While this can make them seem more genuine, it’s often just part of the scam.
Some scammers will avoid video calls, but others will initiate them—especially if they don’t live in your country and aren’t concerned about being recognized.
Be careful, as this tactic is becoming more common.
Recently, there have been reports of scammers using AI technology to conduct real-time video calls.
They can alter their appearance to look like a different person and instantly change their voice from male to female, making it necessary to be cautious.
Even during video calls, take care to verify if the person is genuinely who they claim to be by observing for any inconsistencies.
How to Spot a Scammer
Here are some common signs that you might be dealing with a scammer:
- They bring up business or money-making opportunities right away.
- They quickly suggest moving to another messaging app.
- They frequently send photos, videos, or other media.
- They claim to have learned business or investing skills from family or close relatives.
- They send photos of the book Rich Dad Poor Dad (or similar), sometimes in different languages.
- They send images of large amounts of cash or pictures meant to display wealth.
- They encourage you to get involved in their “business” or investment opportunity.
If you encounter someone like this on a dating app, be cautious and avoid giving out personal information.
Always keep your conversations on the dating platform until you’re sure you can trust the person.
Stay Alert: Scammers Evolve
Keep in mind that scammers are always coming up with new tactics to deceive people, so it’s important to stay vigilant.
While this article highlights some of the most common scams, there are always new tricks being developed.
Remember, the scammer isn’t interested in you—they’re interested in your money. So if something feels off, it’s best to cut contact immediately.
There are plenty of genuine people out there, so don’t waste your time on someone who seems suspicious.
If you’re savvy and know how to navigate these traps, you’ll find better matches and more rewarding connections.
