Tattoo-Friendly Hot Springs
Many friends often ask me where they can go to a hot spring even if they have tattoos, so I decided to introduce some tattoo-friendly options.
Even for Japanese people, finding a hot spring that allows entry with tattoos can be challenging.
I imagine it’s especially difficult for foreigners who may have searched but couldn’t find a suitable place.
For those with small tattoos, I recommend the following hot spring.
Tattoo Cover Stickers Required (12.8×18.2 cm)
- Ofuro Cafe Utatane
Located in Omiya, Saitama, Ofuro Cafe Utatane is not just a hot spring;
it’s a stylish cafe where you can enjoy meals, a lounge with unlimited manga, a working space, and even accommodations.
It’s tough that in this day and age, having a tattoo can prevent you from entering a hot spring. It’s a strange rule, isn’t it?
After researching, I found that many hot springs only allow entry if you cover your small tattoo with a sticker.
For those with larger tattoos, finding a place can be quite difficult.
And even for small tattoos, the stickers often don’t cover enough, making it impossible for most people to enjoy the hot springs.
Recommended Tattoo-Friendly Hot Springs
Here’s what I discovered about how to enjoy hot springs even if you have tattoos.
I recommend guesthouses with hot springs for those with tattoos.
Many guesthouses with hot springs allow entry for guests with tattoos.
Here are some of my recommendations:
Hakone Tent
Hakone Tent is a guesthouse with hot springs, located just a 2-minute walk from Gora Station.
This guesthouse was renovated from an old inn and opened in June 2014.

Hakone Guest House Toi
Another recommended guesthouse is Hakone Guest House Toi, which also has hot springs and allows entry for guests with tattoos.

There are other guesthouses with hot springs that might be tattoo-friendly, so it could be fun to do some research on your own.
Public bath : Sento
Next, I’d like to introduce a place that allows entry with tattoos, though it’s more of a traditional public bath than a hot spring.
If you’re interested in experiencing an old-fashioned bathhouse, this is the place for you.
Note: I haven’t personally visited Daikokuyu, so I’m not familiar with the atmosphere inside.
Daikokuyu
- Daikokuyu Website
Located in Sumida Ward, Daikokuyu (Oshiage Onsen) is a public bathhouse that stays open all night, a first in Tokyo.
You can drop by without bringing anything, as they provide towels and other essentials.
Besides these options, there are many hotels in Japan with private baths, so that’s another alternative.
Whether it’s a bath attached to your room or a private hot spring with time restrictions, you won’t have to worry about tattoos.
However, these options can be expensive, so if you’re on a budget, I recommend staying at a guesthouse with hot springs.
Hopefully, the day will come when everyone, even those with tattoos, can freely enjoy hot springs in Japan.
Why not experience the joy of Japanese hot springs, even with tattoos?
